Info
Color is more than just visual—it is a product of chemistry, transformation, and discovery.
This exhibition explores the fascinating intersection of chemistry and color, and reveals the surprising stories and facts behind four unusual hues. Smalt, mauveine, glaucous, and puce—each shaped by organic chemistry, biochemistry, natural science, and history.
From smalt’s heat-fused glass to mauveine’s accidental creation, to glaucous hues formed by biological coatings and puce’s unexpected natural origins, this exhibition reveals how chemistry has created and influenced color throughout time. Exhibit viewers can witness the enduring relationship between science, art, and serendipitous discovery that shapes our perception of color today.
